Growth And Development In Adolescents

Adolescence can be grouped from 12 years of age to 18 years. This is a highly immature age, and the transition to maturity happens at the end of it. A child goes through several mental and physical changes during this age span. During the adolescent years, a child would typically understand higher intellects like understanding mathematical concepts and also moral concepts.

They also start questioning older beliefs, and finding out whether there is sense in them. Slowly they realize more about themselves and their identity. They start understanding the meaning of deeper relationships and also are more intimate at this age.

The physical development is fast and dramatic in adolescents. The sexual characteristics start appearing in girls and boys. Girls gear up towards puberty and boys start developing other prominent features like hair on the face, and breaking of voice. In girls, the physical changes can be noticed in the form of development of breasts and curvier figure. They also develop pubic hair and under arm hair. For most children, these changes start during the tenth year of their lives, and continue until they are 15 or 16 years old.

Emotional changes in adolescents also undergo rapid changes. Some may turn out to be shy and withdrawn, while others are more confident and outspoken. All this comes from the inner confidence levels due to the physical changes in the body. Appearance plays a big role in a life of the adolescent. Also, during this age adolescents show more independence and lesser interest in family outings.
