Gender Roles And Child Development

Parents play the biggest role in child development. Both mother and father have a big and equal role to play in child development. It is a known fact that mother and father have different impacts on the child. Great child psychiatrists like Dr. Spock and Sigmund Freud have established that the gender of the parent matters in child development and bringing out different qualities in them.

Until children develop an individualistic personality they remain a reflection of the parent. This phase lasts for a long time in their life. At different stages of development, they pick up different traits from their parents. Also, the gender of the child matters. Girls and boys behave differently with their parents.

For a girl, the father plays an important role at a much younger stage of child development. They are more affectionate with their father; and for boys, mother holds a similar position. Later on, boys tend to become like their dads, and exhibit their personalities. Girls become more dependants on their mothers for support. This pattern continues to their own personality also. For a boy or a girl discovering their own sex is a huge process. Calling themselves a boy or a girl starts as early as 18 months in children. Their choice of colors, toys and interests are all driven by the gender. By early teens, girls already are completely aware of their sexual instincts and boys also come to know about themselves. There is a natural attraction in opposite sexes in any normal child.
