A recent survey highlighted that there are more than 100,000 names with Italian origin. A large percentage of this number denotes names that are extremely unique and are selected rarely by parents. About 17,000 Italian names fall in the popular category and are heard of frequently. |
Conventionally speaking, Italian prefer to name their little ones after a paternal or maternal grandparent; the priority lying towards the father’s lineage. In a book entitled, ‘A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering Your Italian Ancestors’, the author Lynn Nelson illustrates that normally as per the Italian culture, the first male child is named after the paternal grandfather, while the second one takes the name of the maternal grandfather. Similarly, the first female child is called by the name of the paternal grandmother, while the second girl child gets the name of the maternal grandmother. The next set of children is usually named after a favorite relative, one of the parents or famous saints.
